Argentina was World Champion for the first time. Brazil finished the 1978 World Cup in third place.
It was the last match in the second round of 1978 World Cup, Argentina-Peru. Argentina as host of the tournament needed to beat Peru by 4 goals to play in the final. They won 6-0 and qualified to the final match against Holland although some of the best Peruvian players of all times were there. Rumors suggested that Peru might have been bribed into allowing Argentina to win the match. Football fans also pointed out that Peruvian goalkeeper Ramon Quiroga was born in Argentina. Nothing was ever proved.
